Shooting From the Hip

For the last two years, my approach to photography has been careful and highly controlled. For this work, I decided to sacrifice my autonomy over the photographs and allow the camera to function as its own being.

I took pictures without looking through the viewfinder, shot the same roll multiple times, and randomly rewinded my film. This process created unplanned compositions that more accurately reflect my shifting mindset as I transition to a new phase in my life: moving away to college and challenging myself as an artist.

Several works in this collection are enlarged views of the transitions between frames. The attention given to this space attempts to bring these photos past a simple view of the world into a larger discussion about the specificity of film photography—an art form that has been a vital space for creative and personal exploration for me.
